“at the end”

even while the sea
stirs up itself,
i must ask,
why say
goodbye without saying why?
why say goodbye?
why without why?

at the end
of an impulse,
were you still
as I remember?
what bones became
beneath sifting sand?
what bones became
time and again?

even while the sea
stirs up itself,
i must ask
at the end
could i have helped
change
your reason
why?
could i have done
anything different?

even while the sea
stirs up itself,
would my words
in that moment
have mattered?

at the end
of an impulse,
is it fair
we blame ourselves?
