“FOR EVERY ANT”

For every ant,
caterpillar,
snail,
worm, or crack
in the sidewalk
I've stopped myself
from stepping on,
there must be millions
I never noticed
and
millions more to come
that I won't see
and I won't miss
and therefore
feel nothing really for;
except perhaps
a scant sense of
missed opportunity
to add them to
the death toll on my sole.
