“I STOPPED TO PET A CAT”

I STOPPED TO PET A CAT
ON MY WAY HOME, TODAY.
IT WAS AN ORANGE TABBY,
WET FROM THE RAINSTORM.
THEN, I WALKED
THE REST OF MY WAY HOME,
PUT AWAY THE GROCERIES
AND SAT MY ASS DOWN ON
THE TOILET.
ANOTHER CAT CAME ALONG,
WANDERING IN, STRIDING
BETWEEN MY SPREAD LEGS
AND SO AGAIN
I STOPPED TO PET A CAT.
I KEEP ON
STOPPING WHATEVER I AM
DOING
TO PET THESE CREATURES.
THAT'S WHY I NEVER GET
ANY SHIT
FINISHED.
EVEN NOW, THERE'S ONE
AT MY FEET, MEOWING,
WANTING TO BE PICKED
UP AND SET ON MY LAP.
IT'S ON ITS HIND LEGS,
PAWING AT MY ELBOWS.
THIS ONE SLEEPS WITH
ME WHEN MY HOUSEMATE
IS SLEEPING ELSEWHERE,
WHICH HAS BECOME MOST
NIGHTS.
I SUPPOSE IT'S TRYING
TO TELL ME IT'S TIME
TO END ANOTHER POEM.
I COULDN'T AGREE MORE,
SO I REACH DOWN FOR IT.
CATS KNOW BETTER THAN
I DO,
BUT THEN MOST THINGS
DO.
I STOP TO PET THE CAT
AND WE CUDDLE TOGETHER,
LIKE THAT;
HIM ON MY LAP;
TWO CREATURES
THAT HAVE LITTLE ELSE
IN COMMON EXCEPT
THE PLACE I WRITE
IS
THE PLACE HE SHITS.
FOR US,
IT'S ALL THE SAME.
IT'S ALL WE HAVE
TO COMFORT OURSELVES
ON THE DAYS IT RAINS.
