“thick like sap”

There is nothing more gruesome
than the sight
of red blood on the dark gray
bark of a tree—
Fresh, dry, or dripping
thick like sap.
There is nothing more gruesome;
Not even upon realizing it is you
who has been skewered in half.
All of this,
for a generic headline that reads,
Man Recovering From Accident.
