“WHEN ONE DOOR CLOSES”

Both sides become
shut out,
Both sides hear
the thud;
the solid click.
And too often,
nobody tries
the knob to know
if it will
turn,
one way or
the other.
Both sides dwell
on who pushed and who pulled;
speculating
the noises at night
or silence on the other side
of the closed door
that came between
what had always been
until then
open.
